Scheduling Your Headshot Photo Shoot
You’re not really in the market for a new job, but you hear of a position that really intrigues you and you decide to submit your résumé. Only problem is your seven-year-old headshot. Gotta get a new one NOW! So you book a photographer and get that thing scheduled as quickly as possible, right?
Maybe. But perhaps a little more thought needs to go into booking your photo shoot. Have you really looked at your calendar? Are you busy at work, trying to cram it in between meetings? Is this the ideal time to take a photo you want to represent you at your best?
Are you recovering from an illness – even just getting over the flu? You want to look healthy and vibrant in your picture, so maybe waiting a few days would be a good idea.
Have you got a vacation planned? Planning a photo shoot once you’re rested and relaxed might be a great way to capture your best look.
Did you recently get your hair cut – or have some “work” done? Be sure your hair is grown out the way you like it and you are looking your absolute best before scheduling your photo shoot.
Are you a good sleeper? You definitely want to do all you can to be well rested the night before your appointment with the photographer. Don’t plan your photo shoot the day after your class reunion or other big celebratory event. Even the most accomplished makeup artist will have a hard time disguising the tell-tale signs of a late night.
Are you an early bird or a night owl? We all have times of the day that we’re most energized, alert, and awake. You definitely want to schedule your photo shoot for your best time of day.
Whether your goal for your headshot is to land you the perfect position or an invitation to audition for an off-Broadway show, you want to do everything you can to give yourself the advantage – and that includes choosing the most strategic time for your headshot.
